Solar Cables & MC4 Connectors
The cheapest part of a solar build, and the one that quietly wastes what you paid for everywhere else. Undersized cable turns panel output into heat before it reaches the battery.

Undersized cable is a tax on everything else
Voltage drop scales with current, with distance, and inversely with the cable's cross-section. On a low-voltage DC run — and a 12V system is very low voltage — the current is high for the power involved, so the losses arrive far sooner than people expect.
The practical consequence: a long thin run between panel and controller can cost you a noticeable share of the output you paid for, and it shows up as a battery that never quite reaches full charge rather than as an obvious fault. If you are running more than a few metres, go up a size. Cable is the cheapest component in the build and the only one that penalises you invisibly.
Keep the run short where you can. Mounting the controller near the battery and running the higher-voltage panel side further is generally better than the reverse, because higher voltage means lower current for the same power, and lower current means less loss.
MC4, and why not to improvise
MC4 is the standard connector on essentially every solar panel sold, including the ones on this site. They are weatherproof, they lock, and they are polarised so you cannot reverse them by accident.
Buy proper crimped MC4 connectors and the crimping tool, or buy pre-made leads. Twisting wires together under insulating tape works on a bench and fails outdoors in Malaysian humidity — corrosion raises resistance, resistance makes heat, and a hot joint in a junction box is how DIY installations start fires.
Solar DC cable is not the same as household wire. It is UV-stable, rated for a wide temperature range, and double-insulated for outdoor use. Ordinary indoor cable will go brittle and crack within a couple of years of direct sun here.
Where the legal line sits
One line worth being clear about before you buy anything. A standalone 12V or 24V setup — panel, charge controller, battery, and appliances wired only to that battery — is yours to build, and nothing here touches your TNB supply. The moment any of it connects to your house wiring or feeds back to the grid, it is a different job legally: that needs a licensed electrical contractor, and for anything grid-tied, SEDA registration and TNB approval. Mixing the two is where DIY solar goes wrong in Malaysia.

Common Questions
What size solar cable do I need?+
It depends on current and distance, and the honest answer is to size generously because cable is the cheapest part of the build. Voltage drop rises with current and length and falls with cross-section, and on a 12V system the current is high for the power involved — so losses arrive sooner than expected. For anything beyond a few metres, go up a size.
Can I use ordinary house wire for solar panels?+
Not outdoors. Solar DC cable is UV-stable, rated across a wide temperature range, and double-insulated. Ordinary indoor cable goes brittle and cracks within a couple of years of direct Malaysian sun, and the failure is at the insulation rather than the conductor — which is the dangerous way round.
What is MC4 and do I have to use it?+
MC4 is the standard connector fitted to essentially every solar panel sold, including the ones on this site. It is weatherproof, locking and polarised. You should use it: the alternative is improvised joints, and in Malaysian humidity those corrode, and corrosion means resistance, heat, and eventually a fire in a junction box.
Does a longer cable really lose that much?+
More than people expect on low-voltage DC. The loss shows up as a battery that never quite reaches full charge rather than as an obvious fault, which is why it goes undiagnosed. Keep runs short, and where a long run is unavoidable put it on the higher-voltage side of the controller, since higher voltage means lower current and lower loss for the same power.
AWG or mm² — how do they relate?+
Both describe conductor cross-section. The trap is that AWG runs backwards: a smaller AWG number is a thicker cable, so 10 AWG is heavier than 14 AWG. Where a listing gives mm² the comparison is more intuitive. If a listing gives neither, treat that as a reason to look at a different listing.
Do I need a fuse or breaker?+
Yes, on the battery side particularly. A lithium pack can deliver enormous current into a short circuit, and the cable will not survive it. An appropriately rated fuse or DC breaker close to the battery terminal is standard practice and cheap. It is not optional on any build you intend to leave unattended.
