Solar CCTV Cameras in Malaysia

A typical 4G outdoor camera draws somewhere around 3 to 5W while recording and far less while idle, so on paper a 3W panel balances the books. In practice it does not, and the reason is specific to where you live: Malaysia averages roughly 4 to 5 peak sun hours a day, and a monsoon week can deliver a fraction of that for days on end.

The panel has to refill the battery on the bad days, not the average ones. Treat 5W as an absolute floor for a camera you check occasionally, and prefer 8W or more for anything you actually rely on. The same logic applies to the battery: a 5,000mAh cell will not carry a camera through four overcast days, whatever the panel is rated at.

Shade matters more than wattage. A panel under a tree or a roof overhang for three hours a day loses more output than the difference between a 5W and a 10W module, and no listing will tell you that.

A WiFi camera is cheaper and needs your router to reach it. If you are covering a gate within range of the house, that is the sensible choice and there is no SIM to keep topped up.

A 4G camera carries its own SIM and works anywhere with coverage — a plot of land, a construction site, a kampung house nobody is living in yet. That independence is the entire point of going solar in the first place, and it is what most people buying these actually need. Budget for a prepaid data plan on top of the camera; the data use is modest but it is not zero.

Check the SIM size and whether the camera is locked to particular carriers before buying. A camera that will not register on your network is not returnable as easily as it should be.

IP66 or IP67 is the minimum for anything mounted outdoors here — that is driving rain, not just a shower. Below that, expect water in the housing within a monsoon season.

Resolution claims are inflated across this whole category in the same way wattage is. A listing claiming 12MP on a camera costing under RM200 is quoting an interpolated figure, not a sensor. Judge on whether the footage identifies a face at your actual gate distance, which in practice means reading recent reviews rather than the spec line.

Look for local storage as well as cloud. A microSD slot means the footage survives a cloud subscription lapsing or the 4G connection dropping — and on these cameras the connection does drop.
