DIY Solar Batteries in Malaysia
Storage is where an off-grid build gets expensive and where the specifications get slippery. Amp-hours alone will mislead you; here is how to compare properly.

Amp-hours are not comparable. Watt-hours are.
A 120Ah battery sounds larger than a 100Ah one, and it is — but only at the same voltage. Energy is amp-hours multiplied by volts, so a 3.2V 120AH cell holds 384Wh while a 12.8V 120AH pack holds 1,536Wh. Four times the energy, identical headline number.
This trips people up constantly because both are sold side by side. Single 3.2V LiFePO4 cells are components, meant to be wired in fours to make a 12V pack. A 12.8V pack is a finished battery. Compare on watt-hours and the confusion disappears.
Once you are comparing watt-hours, divide by price and you have the number that actually decides value — the same logic as ringgit per watt for panels.
LiFePO4, and why the BMS is not optional
Nearly everything worth buying for solar storage now is LiFePO4 — lithium iron phosphate. It typically delivers 3,000 or more charge cycles against a few hundred for lead-acid, and it is thermally stable, which matters in a country where a store room sits above 40°C. It costs more up front and is cheaper over its life by a wide margin.
A BMS — battery management system — balances the cells and cuts the pack off before it is over-charged, over-discharged or drawn too hard. Bare cells sold without one are not a bargain; they are an unfinished project, and the failure mode of an unmanaged lithium pack is a fire. If a listing does not mention a BMS, assume there is not one and budget for it.
Match the battery voltage to your charge controller and inverter before you buy anything. A 24V inverter will not run from a 12V pack.
When this is the wrong product
If your goal is backup power for the house during a TNB outage, a portable power station is usually the better buy — it is a battery, inverter, charge controller and sockets in one box, with a warranty covering the whole thing.
If your goal is storing rooftop solar to use at night and cut your bill, that is a home battery paired with a hybrid inverter, installed by a contractor — a different scale and a different guide.
The batteries here make sense as part of a build: a 12V system for a shed, a boat, a stall, a pump, or an off-grid cabin, where you are already choosing the panel and controller yourself.

LiFePO4 for anything you intend to keep. It delivers 3,000 or more cycles against a few hundred for lead-acid, tolerates heat far better — which matters in a Malaysian store room — and can be discharged much deeper without damage. It costs more up front and considerably less over its life.
What is a BMS and do I need one?+
A battery management system balances the cells and disconnects the pack before it is over-charged, over-discharged or drawn too hard. Yes, you need one. Bare cells without a BMS are an unfinished project rather than a bargain, and the failure mode of an unmanaged lithium pack is a fire. If the listing does not mention one, assume it has none.
How many cells do I need for a 12V system?+
Four 3.2V LiFePO4 cells in series make a 12.8V nominal pack, which is what 12V equipment expects. Eight make 24V. They should be capacity-matched and balanced by a BMS rated for the pack, and cells from different batches or suppliers are a poor idea.
Can I use one of these to back up my house?+
Not directly, and mostly you should not want to. These are storage components for a 12V or 24V build. Backing up household circuits means an inverter, transfer switching and a licensed electrical contractor. For plug-in backup during an outage, a portable power station is the right product — battery, inverter and sockets in one box under one warranty.
How long will a solar battery last?+
A LiFePO4 pack rated for 3,000 cycles, cycled once daily, lasts roughly eight years before it drops to around 80% of its original capacity — and it keeps working past that, just with less capacity. Heat and deep discharge shorten it. Lead-acid in the same duty typically manages two to three years.
Do I need approval to install a battery?+
Not for a standalone 12V or 24V system that never touches your house wiring. Once a battery is connected to household circuits or to a grid-tied solar system, that is work for a licensed electrical contractor, and grid-tied installations additionally need SEDA registration and TNB approval.
