Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Solar ATAP, costs, SEDA, and getting started.

What is Solar ATAP Malaysia?
Solar ATAP (Aturan Tenaga Alternatif Persendirian) is Malaysia's self-consumption solar scheme that replaced NEM 3.0. You install solar panels on your home, consume the energy you generate, and export excess to TNB at fixed rates (RM 0.27–0.37/kWh). Credits reset monthly — meaning oversized systems waste money.
How much does a solar panel system cost in Malaysia?
A residential solar system in Malaysia costs RM 12,000–48,000 fully installed, depending on size. The most popular 5 kW system costs RM 18,000–25,000. Prices include Tier-1 panels, string inverter, mounting, wiring, and TNB/SEDA application fees.
How much can I save with solar panels in Malaysia?
Most households save RM 200–600/month depending on system size and electricity usage. A typical 5 kW system pays for itself in 5–8 years and generates over RM 130,000 in net savings over its 25-year lifespan.
Is solar panel worth it in Malaysia?
Yes, for most homeowners with RM 200+ monthly TNB bills who own their home and have unshaded roof space. A 5 kW system typically pays back in 5–7 years, delivers 15–20% annual ROI, and keeps saving money for another 18+ years after payback.
How many kW of solar do I need for my house?
Match system size to your TNB bill: RM 100–200 = 2–3 kW, RM 200–400 = 3–5 kW, RM 400–700 = 5–8 kW, RM 700+ = 8–10 kW. Under Solar ATAP, oversizing wastes credits at the monthly reset — so right-sizing to your actual daytime usage matters more than roof space.
What is the payback period for solar panels in Malaysia?
Most residential solar systems in Malaysia pay back in 5–8 years under Solar ATAP. Payback depends on TNB bill size, system size, daytime electricity usage, and financing method. Cash purchase is fastest; green loans add 1–2 years but need no upfront cash.
How do I apply for Solar ATAP in Malaysia?
Your SEDA-registered installer handles everything. The process: (1) Get 3 quotes, (2) Sign contract and arrange financing, (3) Installer submits TNB and SEDA applications, (4) Physical installation (1–2 days), (5) TNB meter changeout, (6) System commissioning. Total time: 8–14 weeks.
Can I use EPF to pay for solar panels?
Yes. Malaysians can withdraw from EPF Account 2 (flexible) to install solar panels on their primary residence. Solar typically returns 15–20% annually — well above EPF's ~5–6% dividend. Ask your SEDA-registered installer for an EPF-compatible quotation.
Is there a government subsidy for solar panels in Malaysia?
There is no direct cash subsidy for residential solar in Malaysia as of 2026. The SolaRIS rebate ended in April 2025. However, homeowners benefit from Solar ATAP export credits (RM 0.27–0.37/kWh), green loan interest from 3.5% p.a., and EPF Account 2 withdrawal.
What is the difference between NEM and Solar ATAP?
NEM 3.0 used 1:1 net metering with 24-month credit rollover and is now closed to new applications. Solar ATAP is a self-consumption scheme with fixed export rates (RM 0.27–0.37/kWh) and monthly credit reset. Under Solar ATAP, you save more from self-consumption than from exports.
