What is Solar ATAP?

Solar ATAP (Aturan Tenaga Alternatif Persendirian) is Malaysia's 2026 self-consumption solar scheme. You use your own solar energy first, and export excess to TNB at RM 0.27–0.37/kWh. Unlike the old NEM, credits reset monthly — so right-sizing your system is critical to maximize ROI.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Solar ATAP?
Solar ATAP (Aturan Tenaga Alternatif Persendirian) is Malaysia's new self-consumption solar scheme replacing NEM 3.0. Excess energy is exported to TNB at fixed rates (RM 0.27–0.37/kWh), but credits reset monthly — meaning oversized systems waste money.
How much can I save with solar panels in Malaysia?
Most households save RM 200–600/month depending on system size and electricity usage. A typical 5 kW system pays for itself in 5–8 years and generates over RM 100,000 in savings over 25 years.
What happened to the SolaRIS rebate?
The SolaRIS rebate programme ended in April 2025. Solar ATAP is now the primary scheme for residential solar in Malaysia. There is no upfront rebate — instead, you earn from bill savings and export credits.
How does the monthly credit reset work?
Under Solar ATAP, any excess energy credits you earn in a month are reset to zero at the end of that month. Unlike NEM 3.0 which had a 24-month rollover, you cannot accumulate credits. This makes right-sizing your system critical.
Can I use EPF to pay for solar panels?
Yes, Malaysian EPF members can withdraw from Account 2 to fund solar panel installations. Many SEDA-registered installers can help you with the EPF withdrawal process.
Do I need SEDA approval for solar panels?
Yes, all grid-connected solar PV systems in Malaysia must be registered with SEDA (Sustainable Energy Development Authority). Always use a SEDA-registered installer to ensure compliance.
