Solar Inverters & Charge Controllers

The panel gets the attention and the controller does the work. These are the two components that decide whether a DIY solar build runs for years or destroys a battery in a season.

MPPT or PWM — this one is worth the money

A charge controller sits between panel and battery and stops the panel over-charging it. There are two kinds and the difference is real, not marketing.

A PWM controller effectively drags the panel's voltage down to the battery's, and the energy in that gap is lost as heat. It is cheap and it works. An MPPT controller converts the excess voltage into extra current instead, typically recovering 20 to 30% more energy from the same panel — more when the panel voltage sits well above the battery's, which is most of the time.

The rule of thumb: on a small system, say under 200W, PWM is defensible and the price difference is a meaningful share of the build. Above that, MPPT usually pays for itself in panels you did not have to buy. Either way, size the controller's current rating above your panel's short-circuit current, with headroom.

Pure sine or modified sine

An inverter turns the battery's DC into 240V AC so ordinary appliances work. Pure sine wave output matches what TNB delivers. Modified sine is a cheaper approximation — a stepped square wave rather than a smooth curve.

Modified sine runs a resistive load such as a filament bulb or a simple heater without complaint. It makes fans and motors run hotter and noisier, upsets some chargers and power supplies, and a few appliances — anything with a mains-referenced timer, some medical equipment, certain TVs — will not run on it at all.

The price gap has narrowed enough that pure sine is the sensible default now. Buy modified sine only if you know exactly what will be plugged in and it is all simple resistive load.

Where the legal line sits

One line worth being clear about before you buy anything. A standalone 12V or 24V setup — panel, charge controller, battery, and appliances wired only to that battery — is yours to build, and nothing here touches your TNB supply. The moment any of it connects to your house wiring or feeds back to the grid, it is a different job legally: that needs a licensed electrical contractor, and for anything grid-tied, SEDA registration and TNB approval. Mixing the two is where DIY solar goes wrong in Malaysia.

Inverters and charge controllers listed in Malaysia

Sorted by price, highest first — in this category price tracks capability closely, and the cheap end is where the specification claims are least reliable.

Ratings shown are read from the listing title. On inverters especially, a stated wattage is often a peak or surge figure rather than continuous output, so check the continuous rating on the Shopee page before sizing anything around it.

Common Questions

MPPT or PWM — is the difference real?+

Yes. A PWM controller pulls the panel voltage down to the battery's and loses the difference as heat. An MPPT controller converts that surplus voltage into extra charging current, typically recovering 20 to 30% more energy from the same panel. Under about 200W of panel, PWM is defensible on cost. Above that, MPPT generally pays for itself in panels you did not need to buy.

Do I really need a charge controller?+

Yes, always. Connecting a solar panel directly to a battery will over-charge and ruin it, and with lithium chemistry that is a safety problem rather than just an expensive one. The controller is the cheapest component protecting the most expensive one.

Pure sine or modified sine wave?+

Pure sine, unless you know exactly what will be plugged in. Modified sine is a stepped approximation of mains power: fine for simple resistive loads, but it makes motors and fans run hot and noisy, upsets some chargers, and will not run certain appliances at all. The price gap has narrowed enough that pure sine is the sensible default.

How do I size an inverter?+

Add up the continuous wattage of everything you will run at once, then add headroom for motor start-up surge, which can be several times an appliance's running draw. Note that inverter listings frequently quote a peak or surge figure in the title rather than continuous output, so confirm the continuous rating before sizing anything around it.

What is a hybrid inverter?+

One that manages solar input, battery charging and AC output together, and can switch between solar, battery and grid. They are the standard choice for a home system with storage. For a small standalone 12V build, a separate charge controller and inverter is usually simpler and cheaper.

Can I connect an inverter to my house wiring?+

Not yourself. A standalone inverter powering appliances plugged directly into it is fine. Wiring one into household circuits requires a licensed electrical contractor, and anything that can feed the grid needs SEDA registration and TNB approval. This is the point where DIY solar stops being DIY.

What size controller do I need for my panel?+

Take the panel's short-circuit current, add headroom of at least 25%, and choose a controller rated above that. Also check the controller's maximum input voltage against the panel's open-circuit voltage — and remember that wiring panels in series adds their voltages, which is the usual way people exceed a controller's limit without realising.
