Solar Fans, Pumps & Ventilation

Most of these appliances connect a panel to a motor with little or nothing in between. No battery, no controller, no charging cycle to manage. The panel produces, the motor turns; the sun goes behind a cloud, it slows.

That is a poor fit for lighting and an excellent fit for anything whose job coincides with the sun being out. An attic ventilator is the clearest case: a roof space is hottest exactly when the sun is strongest, which is exactly when the panel produces most. The demand and the supply peak together with no storage needed.

The same logic covers a pond or fountain pump, an irrigation pump for a kebun, and ventilation for a store room, greenhouse or workshop. Where it fails is anything you need on demand — those need a battery, which is a different build.

Roof spaces here routinely exceed 50°C in the afternoon, and that heat radiates down into the rooms below and into whatever your air-conditioning is fighting. Moving it out helps, and doing it with a solar fan means no wiring and no running cost.

Be realistic about the scale of the benefit. A ventilator reduces the heat load on your ceiling; it does not air-condition your house, and the honest saving is a cooler upstairs and slightly less work for the air-conditioner rather than a dramatic bill reduction. Anyone quoting you a specific percentage saving is guessing.

It is also worth checking your roof is a candidate: the fan needs a position with genuine sun exposure and the roof space needs somewhere for replacement air to enter, or the fan simply strains against a sealed box.

Pump listings lead with flow rate in litres per hour, which is the flattering number. The one that determines whether the pump does your job is head — how high it can lift water. A pump rated for a 2m head will not fill a tank on a roof, whatever its flow rate says.

For a fountain, flow matters most. For irrigation or filling a tank, head matters most. Both figures should be in the listing, and where only flow is quoted, treat that as a reason to ask before buying.
